A prayer for uncertain times

gate .jpg

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that
I think I am following Your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe that the desire to please You
does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.

And I know that, if I do this,
You will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.

Therefore I will trust You always though I may seem to be lost
and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for You are ever with me,
and You will never leave me to face my perils alone.

"Where two or three..."

Every now and then I use an app called 3-Minute Retreat. On Monday, when Jane had 24 hours in hospital, I experienced what the day's retreat described.

Matthew 18:20

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Jesus makes a promise to his disciples that comes with a challenge attached.  The promise is that, in his physical absence after the Resurrection, Jesus will be present in a new way.  The challenge is where they will experience his presence. Jesus does not say that he will be found in solitude.  Rather, Jesus will be found in the midst of believers who gather together—in the midst of those who seek out each other to build communities of faith.  Disciples must count on each other to experience the presence of the risen Jesus.

I find it reassuring to know I don't necessarily have to be aware of the presence of Jesus in a mystical or direct way.  Christian friends and church fellowship also are conduits of His love and presence, whether it's by their concern, their prayers or their practical support.

St John the Baptist

On Sunday we celebrated our patronal festival (i.e. the saint we're named after). Ours is one of the view who precedes Jesus' earthly existence. I loved the prayers led by Diane in the morning. Here they are:

Dear Father in Heaven

We thank you for this church and for the life & inspiration that St John the Baptist gives us.

A voice cries out, "In the desert, prepare a way for the Lord".

May we take the reason we have been called seriously – and make the most of our lives in every aspect.

Wherever we encounter that desert may we be ready and equipped to share the treasure we have.

We thank you for the faith and lives of those who have worshipped here in the past.

We give you thanks that we have the privilege of serving here now.

And we pray for those who succeed us in the future.

May all who come here seeking you, find you . . . and discover your blessing of peace.

We pray that we may live faithfully, As useful & dependable witnesses –

Showing others in our communities and our benefice our sincere love for each other.

Therefore, we ask you to renew and develop in us today a love for one another that honours the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
