On Sunday 20 September members from all four churches in the Benefice gathered at St John’s hall for a simple celebration marking the 10th anniversary of Alec’s licensing in the Benefice. It was a joyful occasion with lots of laughter – and cake! Over the summer we had collected donations towards a collective gift, which we presented to Alec: a silver home communion set that will undoubtedly be treasured and used in his ministry for many years to come. As the cake disappeared, the boardgames came out and play began, with people from the community joining in alongside church members.
This autumn, we will be looking at our vision for St John’s, looking ahead and making plans for the coming years. As we do that, it is also good to pause and look back, to be thankful for what we have already been given.
I am thankful for Alec’s ministry here. I am also deeply grateful for being able to celebrate together as a church community. Whether preparing food and serving drinks, signing cards and contributing financially, or simply being there to take part – so many people had a hand in shaping this celebration. So, although Alec was (deservedly if perhaps somewhat reluctantly!) in the spotlight, I felt this was also celebration of the Benefice itself, of the friendship between our churches, and of the joy that we can find in coming together and working together. – Miriam Jones
