Our Sunday Club Pathfinders group recently looked at the hope we have in Jesus. Through discussion, creative activities and a thought-provoking poem, the young people (11-18 yr olds) explored Matthew 9:9–18. This passage includes the calling of Matthew, and how a synagogue leader asked Jesus to bring his daughter back to life.

Jesus Causes a Stir

We talked about how Jesus caused a stir wherever he went – by the way he spoke and by what he did. In Matthew’s account, Jesus calls a tax collector to follow him, eats with sinners and challenges the religious expectations of the day. The Pathfinders discussed what it might have felt like to witness these moments and how Jesus still surprises us today when we let him into our lives.

Jesus Does the Impossible

The group looked at how Jesus used his power to do what no one else could. A woman who had been ill for 12 years reached out and touched the edge of his cloak – and was healed. Then Jesus responded to the request of the synagogue leader and brought his daughter back from the dead. These stories remind us that nothing is impossible for God and even the smallest step of faith can connect us to his power.

Creative Response

To help explore the theme further, we listened to the poem ‘Impossible’ by Harry Baker on YouTube, a spoken-word performance challenging the notion of impossibility. Listen here: bit.ly/hbimpossible

As is normal, we then moved on to a time of arts and crafts, an important part of our time together. You can see some of our creations in the photos here.

We’re so proud of our Pathfinders – keep shining your light! See you all in September.
